The widely awaited live-action rendition of Rockstar Games’ legendary Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, starring Will Smith as Carl “CJ” Johnson,
is finally making its way to the big screen.
The film, which is helmed by Straight Outta Compton and The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray, aims to bring a new perspective to CJ’s return to Los Santos while retaining the gritty, action-packed essence of the original 2004 game.
Set in the early ’90s, the plot follows CJ as he returns home to San Andreas following the murder of his mother. Upon arrival, he’s immediately pulled back into the chaotic gang wars that control the streets of Los Santos. Audiences can expect high-octane car chases, intense shootouts, and emotional storylines, as CJ navigates complex relationships with his family and former gang members.
The movie will also explore the broader socio-political landscape of the era, dealing with themes of police corruption, racial tensions, and inner-city struggles that are central to the game.
Will Smith, a veteran of both action and drama, is set to give CJ a commanding presence. His performance is expected to bring depth to the character as CJ battles to take back control of his life while confronting old rivalries and new threats.
Smith’s portrayal aims to capture the character’s internal conflict and his determination to protect his family while surviving the violent streets of San Andreas.
